Transformative career thinking
Our coaching consists of four steps. You can go through each step or pick and choose among them relative to where you are in your journey.
In Step 1, you get clear on your career and lifestyle goals. Science and technology policy is a big world – what is the policy arena where you want to have the most impact? Where are you the most competitive for the positions there are available? Are you looking for a long-term career or just a brief respite from your current job? And what about your lifestyle? Are you someone who is fine with working nights and weekends? Or are you someone who has young children or an elderly parent, so you need a job that fits with your family life? Are geographic considerations important to you? Once you and your coach both understand these considerations, we have a basis for Step 2.
In Step 2, you explore the open career opportunities. Science & technology policy jobs are available inside and outside government, nationally and at the state level, and internationally. Understanding where those jobs are available, however, is not always easy. This can make it challenging to both find and apply for available positions. You also need to understand what is involved in the wide variety of policy positions to see what interests you. Through coaching, we can help guide you in understanding what science and technology career opportunities are right for you.
In Step 3, you prepare your science and technology portfolio. You might have a great scientific and technical CV or resume, but is it focused appropriately for science and technology policy positions? Do you need to take action now to enhance your portfolio, like writing policy briefs, volunteering for programs, and so forth? During Step 3, you’ll work on preparing or updating your resume and a cover letter that can you can modify for each position for which you apply. You’ll also take a look at your digital profile, such as your LinkedIn profile, and put together at least a simple webpage with your elevator pitch.
In Step 4, you begin implementing all that you have learned to find the right position for you. You’ll go through mock interviews so you can be ready to answer questions at each stage of the interview process.
In addition, as part of your coaching package, you can take advantage of comprehensive resources designed to boost your understanding of Science and Technology Policy and policy analysis skills, including program evaluation, cost-benefit analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, equity analysis, risk analysis, and how to use AI tools, like Chat GPT, to enhance the quality and efficiency of your analysis. If you decide to complete these classes, you can earn digital badges you can post on your LinkedIn page and include on your resume.

“Debbie advised me on which positions to look for and the need to target my career search to my policy interests rather than broadly searching. This allowed me to find a position that perfectly fits my interests in life sciences policy and biosecurity. I also have a great mentor that has been super supportive and led me to expand my policy interests to science diplomacy, international security, and arms control.” Trisha |
